You've had an accident and now you have a damaged laptop screen. It's a stressful event, but there are options. So don't throw your laptop away just yet. What to do with a laptop with a cracked screen depends on how old the laptop is, how handy you are, and what kind of warranty coverage you have on your laptop.

First, let's start with laptop age. As a rule of thumb, if your laptop is more than 4 years old it is usually not worth it to repair. Exceptions are if it's a high end laptop such as a Lenovo ThinkPad, a compact Sony Vaio, or a high end Alienware system. Also, if you have expensive software installed on it and it would be difficult to duplicate on a new laptop, then it may be worth it to go through with the repair. If your laptop is less than 4 years old, but there's additional damage such as motherboard or hard drive probIems, then it's also not worth it to do the repair. If you decide not to do the repair, the best thing to do is to convert the laptop to a desktop computer by connecting it to an external monitor.

If you decide to go through the repair, the first choice is whether to do it yourself or have someone else do it. If you're mechanically inclined and can reach all the screws on the plastic screen frame without taking the rest of the laptop apart, then you may want to try to do it yourself. Each laptop model is different, so you have to find instructions for your particular laptop, but the first thing to do is take the broken LCD panel out. On the back of the panel will be a part # for that laptop. Once you have the part #, do an Internet serach for it and buy a replacement panel from a reputable vendor and put it back in. If all goes well you'll have a functioning laptop again and saved on labor costs.

If you decide it's worth it to repair the first thing to check is if you have accidental damage coverage on your laptop, either through the manufacturer, the store or website you bought it at, or through your credit card. If you do, follow their instructions.

If you don't have accidental coverage, you can get the laptop repaired either by the manufacturer, at a "big box" electronics or office supply store, at a local computer repair shop, or at a mail-in laptop repair company. The choice depends on your budget and trust. The cost for the repair would be highest with the manufacturer and the lowest when you mail it in for repair. Computer repair shops usually charge less than "big box" stores. Repair time is roughly the same for all choices (1 - 2 weeks) because even a local repair shop would have to order the screen. If you go with a repair shop or mail-in laptop repair make sure they're experienced with laptop screen replacement (lot's of delicate components that can be damaged), are trustworthy (have good reviews and a solid warranty) and communicate well (return phone calls and emails promptly).

Once you decide on how to repair the laptop screen, make sure you keep all records and test the laptop as soon as you received it back. If you see any signs of trouble, contact the repair company promptly and document all contacts. A reputable business will take care of any issues. If all goes we'll, you'll have a functioning laptop again with years of use left!
